Happy New Year!

Hi all,

Hope you are all well. Where does time go??

I've had a busy year - a bit of a rollercoaster with ups and down too - with kids passing final consultant exams which is good, and with loosing people which is not so good.  Plans for next year look good with my older son planning to move back to Edinburgh and my sister there now too. . A  year too of engagements and then weddings to look forward to in 2016.  

The Scottish referendum has meant a reawakening of political engagement here - with the disenfranchised, sometimes for the first time, feeling that their voices can make a difference.

I continue to enjoy my photography while devoting more of my time to writing. Writing however takes a great deal of time to get right.

I am looking forward now to Celtic Connections 2016 which brightens up the cold January nights. It gets better every year with many artists coming from across the world and highly unique collaborations.   

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! to all those who come over and read my blog and post on the Scottish Arts and Music Facebook page. Scotland has seen yet another year of a vibrant cultural scene. In fact Scottish culture has been having a revival alongside our stronger Scottish voices... Music and art continue to inspire me....Hoping 2016 brings some peace and sanity to all those who feel disenfranchised  : ))

Sometimes I believe images should speak for themselves – other times that there is a story behind every image.

I grew up in Edinburgh and I now live north of Glasgow (as well as ten years in America) which I hope give me unique perspectives. I am a writer, artist and musician. I read mostly music related book and articles. I play piano and my children are all musicians.

In 2004 and 2006 I took photos at gigs and festivals and re-discovered my passion for art, words and music that I had lost over the years. I realised that a good photo was mostly about having a good eye, while good equipment is like having good tools! 

I received good feedback for my photography and I worked on developing my craft and skills. I took images of several up-and-coming artists in Scotland who are now signed to Major Labels. One of these was Emeli Sande, who in 2012 went on to big things with her album Our Version of Events. I took photos at her ep launch at the Oran Mor Glasgow in December 2007 when she had much bigger hair and these photos were used in her promotions over the next few years. 

MY PHOTOGRAPHY is about creative & alternative style, natural light, composition and photo journalism. My focus is looking for good light and specifically on portraiture. I admire the photographers Mario Testino, Eve Arnold and David Bailey. I aim to mix the old with the new and capture moods such as quiet moments of inner reflection.


My images have been used in print media worldwide and online by major publications and media that include – Daily Mail, Financial Times, The List, The Sun, BBC, News Group Newspapers Limited. Also for album artwork, authors promotions and more. I distribute for editorial purposes. Supplied images to artists promotions such as Emeli Sande (my photos were used for her promotions back n 2008 and 2009 before she was famous).

As a freelance photographer I cover festivals, concerts and events. I submit work to major websites and festivals, press, artists promotions, album art work, theatre and events. My work has included the Edinburgh Festival, Scottish Ballet, Celtic Connections, Manchester Jazz Festival (MJF) and concerts such as Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Snow Patrol.
Emerging artists I have photographed who are now signed to major labels - Emeli Sande, Hurts, Lau, Warpaint, Everything Everything, James Blake, Django Django, Admiral Fallow, Metronomy, Head and Heart, Broken Records, Miles Kane, Low Anthem, more. A live album shoot in Manchester for Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin.

Writers I admire – Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Steinbeck, Somerset Maugham. I adore piano and perfect voices – also Mozart, Chopin, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Paul Simon.

I admire painters – Van Gogh, Manet, Lucian Freud. I write poetry and songs. I play piano and I write on music mostly.

I hope to pursue more portrait work while still covering live gigs, events and festivals. More recently my writing has become very important for me and my work for a book on art and music.

PHOTOS Dec 2011

PHOTOS.  I have the possibility of shooting Photos for 2 weddings next year (not my son's!)  Exciting times. It's wonderful to have some good news. Rab Noakes has requested Photos and posted on my FB - all ultra cool for me. Noakes played with Gerry Rafferty in Stealers Wheel and well worth checking out his songs. I'm waiting on the release of the new canon lens and camera, held up by the Japanese earthquake. 

Musicfootnotes Blog - This has been a big focus the past year, and it combines my writing and photography.

(Also Songbook, Poetrynotes Blog). Developing from this work I’ve been writing other pieces for my possible book (not posted online) which now has several chapters, getting there....? and it seems to be writing itself. Now I'm needing to do a massive tidy-up in Lightroom and sort my online emailings. (and my house!)

GIGS 2011. I’ve been very fortunate to see two music legends live this year who are my biggest inspirations – Paul Simon and Bob Dylan!  Both gigs were awesome. There is good interest in Bob Dylan oddly! and this blog has had more hits than any other so far!   I've also seen exciting new artists this year - Emeli Sande, James Blake, girl band Warpaint and Canadians The Low Anthem. The Book festival this year was incredibly interesting and reading about all the authors there (Photos on my website http://www.pkimage.co.uk).

FINDING THE ARTIST IN US*  My journey as an artist through my musicnotes, poetrynotes, songbooks and photographic art.  My work includes both new and established artists.  The noughties have been an incredible artistic journey. For the wonderful artists I've been inspired by- Dylan for his words and was himself inspired by Burns; Dalai Lama for his wisdoms; Mario Testino and Eve Arnold for their photographic art..I discovered Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Dylan, Radiohead, more. Motivation is all - to have honesty, integrity about who we are and what we have to offer. To be motivated for the right reasons.

Hi,  Festival season approaches!

I have some exciting Photoshoots lined up.

Some of the artists I follow are doing well. Emeli Sande is supporting Alicia Keys at the Albert Hall this week. 
Check her new songs on YouTube, I love 'Heaven' and her voice sounds incredible. She releases her first album this year. Broken Records toured in the US and Hurts are playing the major festivals.  

I've seen some exciting new artists this year and I look forward to the summer gigs.

I have some writing projects I am motivated over - while I still love photography I need the challenge of writing.  It's a huge focus of my time and inspires my work. My Poems and my Artist in Us.  My 'Hot Guys' gallery continues to get interest!  

Music Photography is all about 'who you know'! Yes really. I've made many wonderful contacts over the years totally 'off my own bat' and through lots of hard work and perseverance. Maybe also as the feedback to my work has been so positive.

My MUSICFOOTNOTES Blog gets good interest worldwide -  the Stats are very interesting and hits from places like Russia, Iran and Japan.

In February I 'was' planning to focus on catching up with myself here, but things have got very hectic so far!  I've been needing a break badly too - which I am taking this week with my lovely daughter to see the 'Northern Lights'. Sometimes we need to step back - re-focus our energies and it's important to do so.  I've been very busy the past month with Celtic - and I spend a lot of my time writing too.

*PHOTOSHOOTS. My plan is to do more photoshoots - so please get in touch if interested. While I will still do occasional live gig shoots.  I'm expecting when these young artists I have shots of are famous I will suddenly be rich? Well one never knows....

*VIKING GALAXY. My son's new band have been in the recording studio - which was great fun and thanks guys! I got some fun B & W shots just posted.  The recordings sound awesome!   They play Classic Grande Glasgow 12th Feb. 

*CELTIC Festival Glasgow  -   While I enjoy many genres, I believe folk or roots music ( or Celtic!) has an important role in keeping our cultural history alive and well. I used to go to Sandy Bells Edinburgh (where I grew up) - about the time Hamish Henderson may have been there. I saw Dick Gaughan in the 70s and travelled to many folk festivals. Celtic explores both our cultures and our diversities and what pulls us together -  our shared humanity and love of the arts, especially music of course!  

NEW ARTISTS.  I have images used as promotions on venue websites, artists websites, flyers and albums.  I  appreciate that people enjoy my work. I have studied music all my life, as have my children, and I believe I have  insights into what makes art, words and music work. I often have original ideas which I find others imitating, and it is flattering while also I wonder why I earn nothing for these ideas. I am not a 'snapper' - I write songs and poems myself and I consider my photography art. I've had wonderful encouraging feedback from many artists, including - Kirsty McGee, Mat Martin, Jim Byrne, Inge Thompson, Pearl (aka Katie Sutherland), Broken Records, Alistair Oglivie, The Magic Hat, who have used my images for promotional material.  

I am very excited about my son's new band ( as is he) and believe they have a great future.  As have the other artists I follow. Photography is a multi-faceted skill that involves contacts, reading, studying techniques, sorting, studying art, studying business, writing. MORE!

ABOUT ME : I am an artist, writer and musician. I've been seriously pursuing photography for 5 years now. Commissions; a live album shoot in Manchester, a London manager for a signed artist requesting a Photoshoot, theatre shows and major festivals. In 2004 I had taken images with a small digital camera at a live gig at the Metro London and I realised then that the art of photography was about having a 'good eye.'  I received good feedback for my photos and worked on developing my craft and skills.  I took images of several up-and-coming artists in Scotland who are now signed to Major Labels - Emeli Sande, Pearl, Admiral Fallow, Dave Gibson, Broken Records.  I grew up in Edinburgh and I lived in the US for ten years. I worked as a primary teacher and I am a mother of three grown-up children - one who is in a rock band in Glasgow called Viking Galaxy.
I hope to pursue more portrait work, while still covering live gigs, events and festivals. I want to thank all those who taught me the joy of music - my first piano teacher, my father, my folk guitarist boyfriend back in my twenties, the Beatles, Joni, Mozart, and my children and all the many artists who have inspired my photography.
