It's wonderful to have some good news. Rab Noakes has requested Photos and posted on my FB - all ultra cool for me. Noakes played with Gerry Rafferty in Stealers Wheel and well worth checking out his songs. I'm waiting on the release of the new canon lens and camera, held up by the Japanese earthquake.

Musicfootnotes Blog - This has been my main focus the past year, and it combines my writing and photography.

(Also Songbook, Poetrynotes Blog). Developing from this work I’ve been writing other pieces for my possible book (not posted online) which now has several chapters, getting there....? and it seems to be writing itself. Now I'm needing to do a massive tidy-up in Lightroom and sort my online emailings. (and my house!)

GIGS 2011. I’ve been very fortunate to see two music legends live this year who are my biggest inspirations – Paul Simon and Bob Dylan! Both gigs were awesome. There is good interest in Bob Dylan oddly! and this blog has had more hits than any other so far! I've also seen exciting new artists this year - Emeli Sande, James Blake, girl band Warpaint and Canadians The Low Anthem. The Book festival this year was incredibly interesting and reading about all the authors there (Photos on my website http://www.pkimage.co.uk).

MY MUSIC BLOG - PKImage Musicfootnotes - http://www.musicfootnotes.com/

FINDING THE ARTIST IN US* My journey as an artist through my musicnotes, poetrynotes, songbooks and photographic art. My work includes both new and established artists. The noughties have been an incredible artistic journey. For the wonderful artists I've been inspired by- Dylan for his words and was himself inspired by Burns; Dalai Lama for his wisdoms; Mario Testino and Eve Arnold for their photographic art..I discovered Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Dylan, Radiohead, more. Motivation is all - to have honesty, integrity about who we are and what we have to offer. I submit work to major websites and festivals, press, artists promotions, album art work, theatre and events. I am an artist, writer and musician. My work has included the Edinburgh Festival, Scottish Ballet, Celtic Connections, Manchester Jazz Festival (MJF) and many concerts such as Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Snow Patrol. In particular I try to mix the old with the new and capture moods such as quiet moments of inner reflection. One of my main interests is taking images of new artists - several of those I've photographed are now signed to major labels.

"Pauline's photos have proved invaluable to the project I hired her for - they are dynamic and very much in line with the brief we gave her. Love it! From the packed exchange of outlandish performers that vie for your attention on the high street, to the quiet shady trees of the Book festival and the comedy shows, the dance and music. Its' amazing how it rolls round again so soon. One of the best thing is not that performers come from all walks of life and from all countries, but the exchange that develops with all the arts falling into the same artistic melting pot in Edinburgh over those few weeks. I grew up in Edinburgh with it's cobbled streets and castle that sits high above us all and it seems to inspire those stories we all seek.
I've made some wonderful goals the past years that I would never have dared dream if it wasn't for the artists that have inspired me. I'm shooting again at Edinburgh Book festival 2011. It was incredible last year taking portraits of such famous authors - and learning from the seasoned pros. Such a thrill when guys like Seamus Heaney or Frederick Forsyth walk round to the press pod! I take photos for Milngavie Folk Club - it's a small thing but great artists. I'm much more selective and only cover events I'll get good reviews for. I do it for the art. Painters need words to inspire, writers need images and musicians need both.

PHOTOS June 2011

<o:smarttagtype name="country-region" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype name="place" namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype>

Hi, Festival season approaches!

I have some exciting Photoshoots lined up.

Some of the artists I follow are doing well. Sometimes we need to step back - re-focus our energies and it's important to do so. I've been very busy the past month with Celtic - and I spend a lot of my time writing too.

*PHOTOSHOOTS. My plan is to do more photoshoots - so please get in touch if interested. While I will still do occasional live gig shoots. I'm expecting when these young artists I have shots of are famous I will suddenly be rich? Well one never knows....

*VIKING GALAXY. My son's new band have been in the recording studio - which was great fun and thanks guys! I got some fun B & W shots just posted. The recordings sound awesome! They play Classic Grande Glasgow 12th Feb.

*CELTIC Festival Glasgow - While I enjoy many genres, I believe folk or roots music ( or Celtic!) has an important role in keeping our cultural history alive and well. I used to go to Sandy Bells Edinburgh (where I grew up) - about the time Hamish Henderson may have been there. I saw Dick Gaughan in the 70s and travelled to many folk festivals. Celtic explores both our cultures and our diversities and what pulls us together - our shared humanity and love of the arts, especially music of course!

NEW ARTISTS. I have images used as promotions on venue websites, artists websites, flyers and albums. I appreciate that people enjoy my work. I have studied music all my life, as have my children, and I believe I have insights into what makes art, words and music work. I often have original ideas which I find others imitating, and it is flattering while also I wonder why I earn nothing for these ideas. I am not a 'snapper' - I write songs and poems myself and I consider my photography art. I've had wonderful encouraging feedback from many artists, including - Kirsty McGee, Mat Martin, Jim Byrne, Inge Thompson, Pearl (aka Katie Sutherland), Broken Records, David Sneddon, Alistair Oglivie, The Magic Hat, who have used my images for promotional material.

I am very excited about my son's new band ( as is he) and believe they have a great future. As have the other artists I follow. Photography is a multi-faceted skill that involves contacts, reading, studying techniques, sorting, studying art, studying business, writing. MORE!

I hope you enjoy my Celtic Connections slideshow on my website - http://pkimage.co.uk/

'Musicfootnotes' Reviews - where I also have several Celtic Gig Reviews -
http://musicfootnotes.blogspot.com/

Glasgow Westend website - http://www.glasgowwestend.co.uk/

Many thanks to both Pat and Jim Byre for all their encouragement - check out Jim Byrne's new CD.

------------------------

Pauline Keightley Photography / PKIMAGE Scotland - Photographic Artist. I am a writer, musician and artist. I submit work to major websites and festivals, press, artists promotions, album art work, theatre and events. My Reviews - MUSICFOOTNOTES. Photos & My work has included the Edinburgh Festival, Scottish Ballet, Celtic Connections, Manchester Jazz Festival (MJF) and many concerts such as Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Snow Patrol. In particular I try to mix the old with the new and capture moods such as quiet moments of inner reflection. One of my main interests is taking images of new artists - several of those I've photographed are now signed to major labels.

ABOUT ME : I am an artist, writer and musician. I've been seriously pursuing photography for 5 years now. Commissions; a live album shoot in Manchester, a London manager for a signed artist requesting a Photoshoot, theatre shows and major festivals. In 2004 I had taken images with a small digital camera at a live gig at the Metro London and I realised then that the art of photography was about having a 'good eye.' I received good feedback for my photos and worked on developing my craft and skills. I took images of several up-and-coming artists in Scotland who are now signed to Major Labels - Emeli Sande, Pearl, David Sneddon, Admiral Fallow, Dave Gibson, Broken Records. I grew up in Edinburgh and I lived in the US for ten years. I worked as a primary teacher and I am a mother of three grown-up children - one who is in a rock band in Glasgow called Viking Galaxy.
I hope to pursue more portrait work, while still covering live gigs, events and festivals. I want to thank all those who taught me the joy of music - my first piano teacher, my father, my folk guitarist boyfriend back in my twenties, the Beatles, Joni, Mozart, and my children and all the many artists who have inspired my photography. Also to all who have encouraged my photography with their kind feedback.

Photos November 2010

- This is one the biggest in the UK and I am incredibly proud of my Edinburgh book festival shoots। Such diverse, colourful and memorable figures from the worlds of Irish poetry, political thought, children's authors, dramatic thrillers, autobiographies and more। This is the first serious portraits shots I've taken - while of course I think of my music photography as portraiture। The latter being often in challenging lighting conditions. This gallery also contains text. A huge thanks to the festival for all its hospitality and kindness. Famous Names at the Book Festival - Frederick Forsyth, Peter Mandelson, Seamus Heaney, Vidal Sasson, Melvyn Bragg, Martin Bell, and many more international names. Posted on my site. http://pkimage।co.uk/

Folk Nights. I also took photos at some fun Edinburgh folk nights the Royal Oak and at my old haunt Sandy Bells. Also the Coral at HMV Picture house. I had a bonny time being inspired at Edinburgh festival 2010 - ah love it! Where character, poetry, art and music flourish for a few sunny weeks - actually it was freezing also in the press pod! I visited my old haunt Sandy bells and got some classic folk shots. And Billy Franks did a fab gig with famous writer Christopher Brookmyre!

Oran Mor। I went down to my nearest venue in October - its an imposing converted church that sits astride the Westend intersection of the areas 2 main roads there। I was especially excited to see Holywood legend Tim Robbins and exciting new duo Hurts, and both were awesome gigs in very different ways। You can read my live gig reviews - http://musicfootnotes.blogspot.com/

My Musicfootnotes bLOG - My live gig Review site has interest from Japan! and I did read somewhere that they are very keen on Scottish Indie music there. Also interest from Russia - and as much traffic from the US as the UK - all scary in a nice way. Its not enormous traffic but enough to make me think...

You can see my Book festival images and others on my site - including Irish poet Seamus Heaney. www.pkimage.co.uk. I hope music and words continue to inspire. I recommend checking their 'Eyes Open' album and their newer album. Some great songs in there - Gary Lightbody is an outstanding talent. He dive bombed into the crowd at one point - great photo op! - and he had us photographers running all over the place. That's the biggest event I have taken at. Quite awesome. It was a prefect sunny day too. I'd forgotten that I had applied for the gig, and was shocked to see the email there for me at noon Saturday - and went into a panic to get ready!! oh dear..

Facebook

Are many of you on Facebook now? It does seem much better for family and friends- and more private then Myspace. Myspace is mostly for artists promotions it seems - so it is interesting for that reason though. Some of my family and friends are now on Facebook - yes us oldies too! and it is good for sharing family pics and news etc. So please add me on facebook if you are on there.

I am taking several events in June. My younger son turns 21 and my duaghters gradation as a doctor on the 30th. July will be quieter I hope. Ross is also moving into a flat in July with his mates - and I guess they spread their wings at some point, that will be a big change too. Sadly I lost a good friend in May too.

My Photo work April 22nd 2010

Photos August 2007. For David's Jazz Bar gigs I got a new lens. (I had already been shooting live gigs over 2006) These gigs were over 3 nights, and the photos I got there are very special to me. In 2007, after realising I was getting pretty good shots I applied to take some music festivals, and was getting really good feedback on my work. In 2008 I took at Celtic Connections and the buzz of doing this festival was incredible. I felt like it was my journey of my own choosing, well it just felt like I belonged. I work very hard at it all. There is loads to learn and getting those special shots don't come easy. Sometimes there simply are special gigs. I have had commissions, photos used for promotions, CD artwork and photos picked up by festivals.

I do my music and portrait photography in the hope that people get pleasure from my photos. I have studied great photo work in top magazines such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, Life since the 70s - and I have always adored great photography.

It's certainly been an incredible journey for me the past few years. Its not only about photography though, because I adore writing music reviews also. Plus other things I am writing and also poetry. Poetry is actually the central thing for me - it is what informs music for me and what motivates. The business side and learning all about the music business, takes up a lot of my time also Plus I am doing a Review blog called 'Musicfootnotes'. If you are interested in a Photoshoot, please get in touch. I am eager and willing for new artistic challenges. There simply is not enough time really - too many plans...I'd like to return to ink drawings and water colours. I miss it.

*My Photo work - March 2010

I have been incredibly busy at the start of 2010 with the Celtic Festival and the concert for Erne Parkin in Milngavie.

*'Celtic Connections' galleries and reviews January 2010. I've been adding many new galleries - and my Celtic photos - which is the biggest event I do. My Celtic Reviews here - www.glasgowwestend.co.uk/

I heard several exciting new artists this year - Fyfe Dangerfield (who is an incredible talented writer) The Low Anthem (made me think of hippies, very low key) Bellevue Rendezvous (stately and serene) Hobopop Collective (soothing Americana jazz) Laura Veirs (songstress who draws from nature) and 'The Future Tradition'. I enjoy the buzz of festivals. It feels a genuine, organic festival also, and not about hype or gimmicks. I notice my photos change each year for some reason. I am not sure if it is me improving - or the festival changing? I wasn't sure if the colour was about the music on stage or the more vibrant stage lighting - maybe it was both. I had a hectic, while fun, couple of weeks of music from such a wide variety of places, cultures and influences. Thanks to all involved, especially the many talented artists and their music.

*Concert for Erne Parkin' gallery - I took photos at Erne's concert on 23rd January 2010. He was the chairperson for Mugdock music festival who died last July, and he will be sadly missed by the community here. My son plays with Erne's son in a rock band called the Viking Galaxy, and they played at the concert. There were in a band when they were 14, and this if their first gig back together for several years. It was fun to see how much they have come on. I even have photos of the band from way back, from this same hall and very same backdrop. Fun!! - this band are seriously going places so keep an eye out for them.

*My Photo work - Some good things recently. I've had photos in the local paper and I submit to 2 Glasgow websites. Some interesting things happening. This year I am being more selective, while I am also much faster processing, sorting, and better at getting the right shots.

PHOTOS 2009 *My Photographic Art and Music Photography -

2009 has been an interesting, busy and wonderful year for my photos and I'd never have dreamed so many possibilities - while its been hard going often too. I've had positive feedback from managers, artist and promoters and that's what I care about and very encouraging. I hope do to more Art photography and to shoot weddings next year. I love it - probably mostly the small venues. I've become friends with many wonderful artists this year and appreciate all their kind words. It's meant a lot. I've been sending some gifts, it gives me pleasure to know that people enjoy my work. For any promotional photos I require payment.

I took pics of Elton, Fleetwood Mac and the Nutcracker Ballet - all of which are dreams for me. Not without hitches - arriving for Elton to find no Photo pass - nearly forgetting the ballet - being late when I needed to be early. I am sure these young twenty years old photographers have no idea what it means to have dreams as long as I have. Elton gig was wonderful - and how much he loves performing them. To be that close and see his passion for it all - and he's been touring for years! He thrives on it. Love his upbeat and slower songs.
Yet also those small venue gigs - the Jazz Bar, Oran Mor, the live album shoot Manchester - have been awesome in a different way - intimate and engrossing. Big thanks to all the artist I've had the pleasure of taking photos for.

*David - A big inspiration has been David Sneddon's music and I believe in his work and talents. He signed with Sony BMG publishing Group and has new management. Many many thanks David for your inspirations and enthusiasms.

Jazz Bar Edinburgh - On Nov 28th I took shots for an amazing new Jazz band at the Jazz Bar for their first album - The Magic Hat. An exciting commission. And the Bar Brel Glasgow. That was my first time there since David's Jazz Bar gigs 2007. The images on the walls had changed from large sepia photos to bright coloured art work - but otherwise it was exactly the same and I had very strange feelings standing at the bar and taking the photos - thinking about it all.

Photos Nov 2009

I have been taking the smaller and mid size venues for quite a while now. I am still keen to do them. I've been taking music photos mostly in Glasgow and some in London. I've also taken several festivals - 2010 will be my third time at Celtic Connections. It's been incredible for me to shoot artists like Elton John and Fleetwood Mac this year. I guess dreams sometimes come true?? I've had managers, promoters and artists come back to me as they like my work. The live album shoot Manchester was so much fun - thanks Mat and Kirsty. Hope this will lead to good contacts.

Protecting my Business – copyright laws
In recent months several of my images are being used in print promotions without asking my permission. I am flattered people like my work enough to put on the front of a brochure or flyer – but can I live on praise alone. Images are central to promotions, and yet some appear to expect the use of photos for nothing. They wouldn’t dream of offering a plumber or a venue a link for a days work! Aspiring photographers fall into this trap. It is piracy - much as free music downloads are. There is masses of Copyright laws (see Wikepedia). The author of a photo should be asked for permission before reproducing the image in print. It is stealing – much as stealing a loaf of bread or pint of milk at Tesco’s… We all know that farmers expect to be paid and need to earn a living. Makes me realize how musicians must feel about all the ‘free’ downloading of their music.
Problems arise as aspiring photographers and musicians offer their work for free and the FREE internet access. There comes a point when you think – I’m not just starting out anymore. I have worked hard on my photography – studying, processing, working, shooting, purchasing good equipment. I hope I now offer a professional service that is not offered by everyone with a small digital. A big thanks to all who do value my skills, and don’t expect that I offer hi-res as ‘gifts.’ My good photographer friend who has worked 25 years in the business is upset over this issue, as it undermines and devalues professional photographers work. It was very nice being treated with respect for my work last week end at the album shoot. Thanks guys.
Paulinex

PS Just listening to a folk radio station – perfect.
Pss and Cara Dillon- hear her on the radio last year, perfect voice.

NEW PHOTO GALLERIES September 2009

I have so many plans. I’ve been very busy with EDINBURGH FESTIVAL 2009 - manic as usual! MUGOCK Music Festival, The Gathering Homecoming event Edinburgh, Dance - Venezuela Viva!

EIF Absolutely love it. My theme this year was ‘colours'. The book festival I particularly enjoy and searching out poetry books, a haven of peace after the high street. Many famous authors visit and give talks, such as Iain Banks, Ian Rankin and many more. I managed a ‘Broken Records’ Queens Hall Edinburgh gig, Edge festival - cool venue and lighting. Expect this band to make it big – they both look and sound good. They released their first album with 4AD June 2009, ‘Until the Earth Begins to Part’. Their cello, violin and trumpet give their sound a Scottish feel.

I took mainly dance images at this year’s festival – very interesting from a music angle as well as the visual. Many shows come from all around the World – India, Malawi, Korea, France, Brazil, Venezuela… more. Celebrating their own country’s culture. My next dream to shoot is the ballet. Here’s hoping. I am also in the middle of an exhibition at a local arts festival.
Please check out my new galleries – very excited about many of the new images. Some hot guys and babes!

My Photography August 2009

<o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="City" downloadurl="http://www.5iamas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:smarttagtype><o:smarttagtype namespaceuri="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name="place"></o:smarttagtype>which I started to take seriously this year is going better than I ever dared to hope. Perhaps that’s what this year is about for me?

Music, film and event photography
I covered a fashion party at the Corinthian Glasgow, which was fun the same day as I met a magazine guy and had an interesting chat. I’ve had images picked up for a wide variety of things – maps, magazines, press. I've had interest from an Arts agency – and been asked to take stills for a movie which sounds fun. It is all quite a strange business in a way.

It is all hugely competitive though and there seems to be loads more music photographers out there than say when I shot images of Patrick Watson at King Tuts in 2007, and I was the only shooter there! – great gig btw. Music photography is about the art of photography for me.

A few years back I read about Paul MacCartney’s tour photographer and how he got a lucky break being in the right place at the right time. I never thought I could ever aspire to this. I check others work and think I can match what they are doing. Sometimes it feels like this dream might be possible. Whatever – I can combine my love of art with my music. I regret not following my passion for art and now I can so I’m grateful for these opportunities.

I was at a wonderful gig at the Tall Ship last week - the weather was blowing a gale outside but inside was a warm and cosy venue of music.
Please get in touch if you like my work and would like me to cover your event or take portrait or promotional shots – a lot of thought and care goes into my photos and I hope you enjoy them.

PKIMAGE

I am a Glasgow Music and Event Photographer. Also recently I’ve been enjoying taking nature shots as the light has been soft and clear and the blossom those light pinks. After receiving encouragement for my work I set up seriously as a photographer last year in 2009.

NEW Photo site
I have been working on a new photo site for quite a long while – for months and months actually! Mind you I’ve been working on art since I was 7 and on photography since I got my first camera – although only seriously with music photography the past year. I took art higher, taught in schools, lived in the USA (Chicago and Cincinnati and travelled quite a lot) for 10 years and brought up my family. I started taking shots of my son’s band and found I enjoyed being able to combine my love of live gigs with my love of art.
I do my photography for the art of it – there’s something magical at live gigs that I try to capture in my images. It reminds me of all the sketching with pencils ( I loved those soft-edged pencils) and charcoal I did in my teens of dancers, models, portraits – except now I sketch with my camera. It takes just as long to get that one perfect capture with a camera as it does with my pencil (you’d think it would be easier), in fact I’ve often thought sketching at a gig would be easier. I’ll need to give this a go sometime!

I wasn’t sure about the zenfolio site. My music images are mostly quite dark- so recently I changed the background to white put the text at the top and I feel much happier about it. Still not entirely sure (??!) Then again an artist is never entirely sure about their work because it can always be better – otherwise what’s the point?

*Festivals
My first festival shoot was Kilsyth 2007 – it was great fun and the organiser was very positive with my photos. I have also taken images for local festivals at Mugdock country park (great setting). Last year my images of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, and of David Sneddon attracted a lot of attention. I’m originally from Edinburgh and enjoy its huge festival each year and have several photos of Edinburgh festival I’m very proud of. The biggest festival I’ve covered is the Celtic Connections 2008 and 2009 - and it takes place in over 13 venues around Glasgow for over 2 and a half weeks with many overseas visitors and artists. I love the buzz of festivals.

*Live gigs
I attend a wide variety of live gigs. I enjoy music from many genres – indie bands, folk, folk-rock, pop, classical more.. In recent years I’ve been to T in the Park, Celtic Connections, Glasgow venues and festivals, London venues, more… make a note to write blog on venues. I enjoy established artists and younger ones also.

Published work – Several artists have used my images on flyers, brochures, websites and in press.

SPF – Scottish Photographers Federation. I joined a local Camera club last year and it’s interesting to meet other serious photographers. To my surprised my images scored well with other photographers and some were submitted to the annual SPF exhibition.

*Photobox Prints - I hope to be soon offering Prints directly online, for personal use only, through my website. I offer 12 by 8 prints with a white border. Also 7 by 5 and 6 by 4.

* Photo Promotions - I also offer the hi-res images for promotions - post out a Pic CD. Payment is required for the use of my copyright on images used on promotion flyers, brochures or press articles (after all the printers, venues, and sound people all get paid for their efforts).

*Online Photos - Big thanks to all the artists that have posted them this year.

*Media. - This week I have had some good contacts - 3 magazines looking for images. Also an agency who are very positive which is so nice - and 2 promoters. A very interesting commission.

Music, art and how we view things is my motivation. To capture images that tell stories. I am a musician, writer and artist. My best are naturally framed and may require only a simple effect. I’ve taken images at Scottish festivals, London gigs – and for Jerry Douglas, Martha Wainwright, Richard Thompson, Eddi Reader, Karine Polwart, Ali Bain, Kirsty McGee, Mat Martin, Inge Thomson, Broken Records.

Feedback… ‘your photos are fantastic, you really caught the moment in those pictures’ -
'you used the light exceptionally well, full of life and really catch the spirit of the festival! You have a wonderfully observing and imaginative eye. Great stuff' < ‘what I find with your photos is that they somehow bring something extra out of the images.. yours have a star quality about them which makes them stand out from the crowd.’

MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY by Pauline Keightley / PK IMAGE

MY GIG & FESTIVAL SETS ON FLICKR - htpp//:www.flickr.com/photos/paulinekeightley
htpp//:www.pkimage.co.uk
For commissions, image licensing and other enquiries please contact.
